I'm loving Hengst's bandeau top. They call it a bandini which is a horrible name except for how it reminds me of Houdini and thus the endless possibilities of playing tricks and working magic by layering it. For modesty's sake, wear it on top of another top. People went nuts over the ruffled platforms and flats by Christian Louboutin at 3.1 Phillip Lim for Spring 09. The Gap, who has been getting better and better at diffusing trends into wearable classics, has put out an adorable although inexplicably-timed pair of ruffled sandals.
Seriously. I will want these in the spring and maybe even for "resort" even though I've never taken a resort vacation, but now? Nope. Throw some ruffled boots at my face instead.

Revolve is launching a new luxury site called Forward while Net-a-Porter is launching a new discount site called The Outnet. Being as it is not a great time to be starting new retail businesses, I wonder which will be more successful. The debate over whether shoppers are looking for a few investment pieces or if they want to find a good deal is going strong across the entire fashion industry.
For retailers it looks like the smart move to make is to diversify and get a piece of every pie.

I have been aware of the benefits of ShopStyle for a little while now. It is a great place to search for an item across a wide platform of shopping sites. Not until today however have I seen its great capacity for comparison shopping.

Yesterday after doing some research at the Bloomingdales beauty counters and Michelle searched for a new winter coat, we hit up the shoe department. This is where I found my perfect shoe. Belle by Sigerson Morrison created a shoe so perfectly suited to me that I couldn't have even imagined it myself. Behold the intersection of moccasin and loafer with a slight punk edge. The $345 Bloomies wanted to charge me seemed prohibitively expensive, but thanks to ShopStyle, I found them on ShopBop for a *mere* $295!

This does make me wonder—since when is ShopBop cheaper than anywhere else and what does Bloomies think they're doing marking something up so much? Aren't people turned off enough by department stores already?

Lately I've taken to putting on the first item I see when I walk into a store. Then I walk around and shop wearing said item. I don't know why I do it and it makes sales people pretty uncomfortable.
Last weekend the victim was the accessories department at Barney's Co-Op. I picked up this Alexander Wang stunner (that I've been lusting over for a while) and instead of swinging it over my shoulder, I pulled the chain straps through the holes on the sides. Believe me when I tell you- this bag makes a SWEET backpack. I've drawn this handy diagram so you can imagine it for yourself, but duh it does not do it justice.
This time, instead of crazy looks from the sales people, the head of the accessories department gave me her card so she could help me in the future. I think my shopping experimentation is really heading in the right direction.

This is the second installment of what could become a regular feature. I pick my 3 favorite items from one of my favorite online stores. Realistically I don't think any store has more than 3 items that are truly worth buying. While I may want it all, the editing process is key.
This time I take a look at Gargyle and Karen Walker's MAJOR Navajo Anthropod Jet Plane dress. Even better, it is made of sweatshirt material and puff paint, reminding me of actually everything I wore in 3rd grade. Paired with this Giles & Brother 10-strand necklace and F-Troupe mens high foxing boots (here's to having huge feet) I'll be feeling comfy cute and ready to step in puddles now that fall has officially arrived.

Belts are one of my favorite accessories to play with. They're easy to mix and match with, pretty cheap, and can change an entire outfit. Every season I come up with a new way I like to abuse the original intent of belts. This summer, I twisted and looped the end through instead of using the buckle holes. This season, I'm all about these two looks from 3.1 Phillip Lim and Marc by Marc Jacobs. Next time you see me, I'll be wearing either a bow that's bigger than a bread box or no less than 2 belts, but no more than 5.

Occupying prime internet real estate is the actor Gary Graham, whose information-packed personal website I stumbled upon while intending to soak up the beautiful designs of NYC's Gary Graham. I've been snared by a case of "I've seen this guy in everything..." And truly, his filmography maps perfectly onto my past as a voyager into TVs less-travelled corners.
Apparently 3 extra letters (NYC) would have directed me to my original target, but now I'm swept up in this guy's resume, trying to dream up gigs I could offer him. But who am I kidding? What role that I imagine could possibly surpass his 2001 role-of-a-lifetime appearance as Vulcan Ambassador Soval?

If I had a penny for everytime I took a chance and went to a designer's website without adding any shop- prefixes or -online or -nyc suffixes... Maybe I could afford all the Gary Graham I want at Jumelle.

They also have this bow thing that without being at all sure what it is, I absolutely know that I need about 10 of them. The color palate of this JMM dress is straight up Mayle Spring 08. In a good way.
Patrick Robinson for the Gap has been blowing my mind- can you believe they're actually doing away with the European collection because those trendy Euros want the American stuff too badly. This trench has a removable wool collar that is hinting at the Mayle shearling one I am lusting over so badly. I'm loving the look of pairing a lux collar with your old coat to freshen it up. I'm also loving the idea of buying a trench since I am currently without one.

All the lines are posting their A/W 2008 lookbooks these days, and many are presenting their newest clothes in increasingly compelling ways. Designed Memory's portfolio has been getting a lot of buzz lately for lending their signature flowy scrapbook and textured aesthetic to many a designer's website. But recently I stumbled across A Small Collection, which takes a similarly seamless Flash approach to its site design, but achieves dreaminess without overdosing on spectacle for spectacle's sake.

Ever since Madewell debuted their live, twirling models to show their clothes to maximum effect, I've been intrigued by this kind of presentation. I like A Small Collection's take, which does the same all while bringing the visitor inside Alyson Fox's utterly believable enchanted winter.

I like Toms shoes- they're cute, comfy, and do actual good in the world, that is until now.
These bandage boots are not cute, do not look comfortable and are doing us all a huge disservice by ever being made.
Yuck Toms, yuck, but if you apologize I will forgive you and we can forget about this whole thing.

I felt very chic even though I find MoMa surprisingly un-chic and I was secretly hoping to run into the sartorialist all day. If he had been anywhere near he would have seen me- these shoes also make me approx 10 feet tall.

The Moment just published this In/Out list by Chris Moukarbel and unlike them, I love In/Out lists. To do one correctly you have to understand very small nuances across broad cultural categories. That or just like making declarative statements.

I think making lists like these can be an interesting exercise and I'd like to try myself, but even more so, I'd like M. Kirstin S. to make one and then I can just look at it and feel smart by proxy.

I agree with Chris though, I always feel my freshest while snapping--it's how I dance. I hold up my wrist just to show off my Casio.

Susie Bubble posted these looks from "mum-pleasing" label COS. On first glance, I was quite taken with the clothes, as I often am when confronted with things that are outside my normal style palette. While the aesthetic here is obviously demure, what we have to go on is quality of fabric and cut. In other words, while there's nothing to grab at immediately in terms of innovation, there is a definite point of view. Subtlety is the statement, since the recognizable outfit elements are all there, but they're provided depth through opacity and layering, and made interesting by the quiet tweaks in proportion.

But then I got to thinking. There are two kinds of reactions I have when looking at collections: 1) The kind that makes me want to run out and create the looks for myself, i.e. the inspirational kind. Usually in this case it's because the vision of the designer has spoken to a part of my taste that springs immediately to "I can do that!" And then I'm sent every which way. 2) The other kind is more of a "Hmm" category. Not in the bad sense. But it's not like I'm going to all of a sudden limit myself to blacks and grays and shades of brown. I'm not going to mute other styles to edit myself down. But I'm still intrigued, thinking about the kind of person who would and could easily incorporate these very focused looks. In the case of the above COS images, what's working here is the ensemble. Separately, the pieces would be boring. You'd get a cardigan. You'd get a white shirt. But worn together, they express something collectively. And because each of the shapes and fabrics rely on each other to express whatever their message is, you'd have to keep them together.

My question is: what's the value in creating these puzzle pieces that resist the mix and match we usually value in dressing, in subscribing to one look? More than other kinds of looks, these (and I'm also thinking of other brands that market themselves at lifestyles, at a certain kind of person who would wear their clothes) sort of force you into a staple category. Is it such a bad thing to open a closet and see a narrow range of looks? Not to wow with variety and flexibility, but rather with discretion and subtle difference? Does this take away from the game of dressing, or is it a different game entirely?

Usually, this is a question of age. Youth is the privilege of eclecticism, and as you get older, you focus. Or not. I think the "boring" looks above take on new meaning when someone obviously young wears them.

It's fun to think about. Could I pull it off? Do I want to pull it off?

Witty and well-crafted jewelry from Chao & Eero brings new meaning to the directive "Express yourself." Chao & Eero are a goldsmithing duo from Finland in business since 2005. The typographical rings above are part of their "Signs" collection, which I adore for the clever way each piece is worn on the body. While I imagine most of the rings would fall off my fingers, they're certainly quality items. Other collections include Pyromance and Tomppu, which both take playful concepts and construct them out of fine metals.

Bad Seed

Right now I'm into seed beads. I own a belt almost exactly like the one on the bottom right. It says Arizona across the back and I love it, but the beads are slowly coming off and I leave a trail wherever I go. The earrings are also cool and something I could actually make myself. With the earrings, the more colorful the better and the longer the better. Just don't come at me with bugle beads; they subtly ruin the look.

New to J.Crew

J.Crew just restocked their website and while I definitely love their simplicity and great use of color, they have seemed a little misguided lately. The dress on the top suits the Mad Men craze and proves that Michael Kors doesn't have a monopoly on that look. For whatever reason, to counter the retro sophistication of that dress, they went and made a couple of Abercrombie-esque t-shirts that leave a bad bad taste in my mouth.

The bright pea coat with an interesting fold-over collar and great tiny buttons is on the right track. I love the contrast of the color and the boucle mohair, making it slightly edgy and slightly preppy. I would probably pair it with black motorcycle boots.

The cardigan is an important standby and might just be the item I need to look like a certain waitress I was admiring.

Etsy- Childhood Flames

A little while ago I posted about one of my favorite blogs making the leap to etsy. That was Vain and Vapid. I've been keeping track of her etsy store and it seems as though things are going well- her new dress sold out before I could get my hands on one.

There's another blogger making the leap as well. This time Camille of Childhood Flames has signed up to start selling her popular circle skirts in her own etsy shop. They are cute, wearable, and make me totally jealous that at 15 I was nowhere near as successful (although I was on my way to a great career as a tennis camp counselor).

-Every time I've checked the store its been empty, but I think that's just because they're selling like hotcakes!

Here are a few looks from Pencey's Holiday 2008 collection. I am more familiar with Pencey for making structured solids, but I am happy to see the mix of grunge, futuristic, and feminine that appears in these looks. Each of the looks seems to carry 2 of the 3 without relying to heavily on 90's references making the collection varied, but surprisingly cohesive.

Blue Suede Shoes

Michelle and I did a lot of shopping when we were in Copenhagen. A lot. It even became easy to ignore the $$$ getting weaker and weaker because everywhere we turned there were great clothes and stylish people to be inspired by.

My single greatest regret was passing up on a pair of bright green Clarks Wallabees. They were suede and bright bright green and wonderful and what was I thinking. I've searched the internet high and low for a pair since, but nothing has come up until today. Since Oak has been giving deep discounts to clear out their store they're ready for some fall stuff- including these Penny Loves Kenny Wallabee knockoffs creatively named "Walkabouts".

I will still always love my Desert Boots though- and expect to see a lot of variations on boys this fall.
